Starship Troopers

Starship TroopersEach level becomes an exercise in simply marching your squad around the map and watching your troops gun down any bugs that get in your way.The game consists of a linear, 20-mission single-player campaign. You're given an initial allotment of about 40 soldiers. Though you'll occasionally rescue some new recruits in a mission, this pool of soldiers must see you through the entire campaign. Troopers killed in action are gone for good. Before each level, you must create and outfit a strike team of between 12 and 21 troopers to take into battle. At the mission's end, each surviving soldier is awarded experience points that eventually cause him to be promoted. The higher a trooper's rank, the better his overall performance. New equipment, such as better weapons and armor, becomes available at predetermined times within the campaign. Each of the 20 missions has a series of goals that must be met. These goals are usually presented to you using voice-overs and cutscenes during various points in each mission. Generally, this forces you to react to the moment rather than plan and enact some master strategy. The goals unfold sequentially, and you complete them one at a time. Though you can break your units into squads, move them into formations, and control each one separately, there's very little reason to do any of this. Your troopers have a much greater chance of surviving if you keep them in a tight knot and move them around as a single group. Each level becomes an exercise in simply marching your squad around the map and watching your troops gun down any bugs that get in your way.The levels generally take 20 to 40 minutes to complete. There is no in-mission save feature; you can only save your progress between levels. Depending on your tolerance for frustration, this may create tension but will more likely make Starship Troopers a tedious chore to play. For instance, one level concludes with a sequence in which you must defend a military outpost from an onslaught of bugs. It's a difficult task, but it's exciting. Unfortunately, it takes place after more than ten minutes of relatively uneventful marching around. The defense portion itself is one of the few times the game really requires some tactical thought, and there are several different ways to approach it. But the amount of time required to get to this point makes redoing the level more annoying than fun and acts as a real disincentive to play it again just to test out some different strategies. What's even more frustrating is that there's no way to skip the cutscenes during a mission, which makes replaying any of the levels even more of a trial.

Aliens Versus Predator 2

Aliens Versus Predator 2It's better than the original Aliens vs. Predator, and it's one of the best action games released so far this year.In lieu of the traditional review preamble, here's the answer to the question you're probably wondering about: Yes, Aliens vs. Predator 2 lets you save anywhere. In fact, the first game is so notorious for its end-of-level-only save system that the sequel has become the first shooter to proudly list its unrestricted save feature right on the box. Monolith, taking over the series from UK-based developer Rebellion, has also added a few other things that the first game lacked, such as a compelling campaign structure, an in-game server browser, some interesting multiplayer modes, and the ability to play all the various Alien life stages. About the only thing it managed to screw up was the unimpressive single-player demo released a couple of months ago. So in answer to your second question: Yes, Aliens vs. Predator 2 is better than its demo. It's better than the demo, it's better than the original Aliens vs. Predator, and it's one of the best action games released so far this year. The original Aliens vs. Predator was essentially a series of unrelated levels. It concentrated on creating a mood of relentless dread while relying on the well-developed and well-known Alien and Predator universes to provide an implicit story. For the sequel, however, Monolith has made a complete turnaround. Aliens vs. Predator 2 not only has a plot, but also has one of the most cleverly constructed plots ever attempted in a shooter. Each of the three seven-level single-player campaigns takes place simultaneously. The events that are made up of one especially bad day for the humans manning a research station on planet LV-1201 are presented from three different perspectives: an alien research subject, a member of a predator hunting party, and a colonial marine who is part of a squad sent in response to a distress beacon. Though each story is self-contained, all three intersect at certain points, and the results of actions in one campaign can be seen in the others. For instance, as the marine, you'll encounter a predator trapped in a cryogenic stasis pod, which you must move so that it can fit down a ventilation shaft. During the predator campaign, it's you in stasis watching as the marine works the pod controls, inadvertently freeing you. The game is filled with little crossovers like these, and it becomes almost like a minigame in itself just keeping track of them, if for no other reason than to appreciate the impressive level of thought that went into creating the story's complex underlying structure.

Tribes: Vengeance

Tribes: Vengeance effectively captures the spirit of the original game, and adds a surprisingly good single-player campaign to a deep and addictive multiplayer component.Third game in the successful first-person shooter series. The endless war has begun. The Empire and the Tribes now fight as much over resources as they do for revenge. But when a war spans generations, it becomes a mother's quest to discover the truth about the conflict, and an heir's duty to break free from the cycle of vengeance. Play as multiple characters across two generations of a family at war in the first ever Tribes single player experience. An upgraded physics system seamlessly integrates jet-packing, running, skiing and piloting into one dynamic experience, and new weapons and vehicles add to the classic Tribes arsenal and guarantee a fight like no other. Battle in vast locations from underground caverns and forgotten cities to acid wastelands and mighty coliseums and join the war online with extensive multiplayer action for up to 32 players. The original Starsiege Tribes was a landmark game for the first-person shooter genre. Combining huge maps, deep team-based multiplayer mechanics, jetpacks, and drivable vehicles, Dynamix' imaginative game laid the groundwork for the design of many of today's most popular multiplayer shooters, including the Battlefield games and Unreal Tournament 2004. The sequel, Tribes 2, was hampered by serious bugs upon launch and it disappointed many players in the Tribes community. Although the game was patched later and modded to a great degree by third parties, the damage was already done, and Dynamix was disbanded shortly thereafter. The development of the next Tribes game on the PC was then handed over to Irrational Games, best known for developing another classic first-person game, System Shock 2. The good news for Tribes fans is that Irrational's stewardship over the Tribes license is a resounding success. Tribes: Vengeance effectively captures the spirit of the original game, and adds a surprisingly good single-player campaign to a deep and addictive multiplayer component.
